The University of San Carlos (USC) was started by the Society of Jesus as a grammar school in Cebu in 1595 under the name Colegio de San Ildefonso. It was only after a series of changes in administration and name that it was taken over by the Society of the Divine Word (SVD) in 1935 under whose administration the institution was officially registered with the SEC as University of San Carlos in November 1968. USC is a non-stock, non-profit Catholic educational institution that seeks to afford a well-rounded program of education including the critical skills of analysis and synthesis as well as that of communication. It aims to develop competent and socially responsible professional and life-long learners in an environment that fosters excellence in the academic core processes of teaching-learning, research, and community extension service. USC offers various programs on the graduate level (pop. 891), college level (student pop. 16,560), high school & grade school (student pop. 5,433), and has teaching faculty of 887and non-teaching staff of 551. Other than academic programs, it also provides scholarship assistance to deserving students and implements community outreach projects around Cebu province. Its main sources of income are tuition, donations and grants, such as from NSDB ? RSTC, DOST, CHED, and NUFFIC (for community extension projects, student educational assistance, faculty scholarships, and institutional research).
