RTN Foundation, Inc. (RTNFI), is a non-stock, non-profit corporation registered with the SEC on February 18, 1987. The Foundation was established to handle the social responsibilities of two donor companies: the Rio Tuba Nickel Mining Corporation and the Coral Bay Nickel Corporation (a processing plant). It is a corporate operating Foundation. The Foundation is housed in a 16 hectare mining camp in Bgy Rio Tuba, Bataraza Palawan. The Foundation has a regular staff of 258, – (of the total staff, 23 are program support, 110 are Hospital Staff; 88 are Teachers for formal school and 37 for Indigenous Learning System. The seven (7) members of the Board of Trustees are composed of representatives of the donor companies and an independent trustee.
The Foundation was granted a five (5)-year certification on February 5, 2008 which ended on February 4, 2013. For its renewal it was again certified for 5 years on September 10, 2013 which ended on September 9, 2018.
The Foundation envisions responsible, self-reliant, educated communities within the host communities of the corporation. It aims to provide basic services to the poor and the marginalized people in the community through people empowerment. The Foundation implement the following programs: 1) Healthcare – by overseeing the operations of the 30 bed capacity Hospital; 2) Education – by operating the Leonides S. Virata Memorial School which offers K-12 program and the Indigenous Learning System (ILS); 3) Shelter – building of houses through the partnership with Gawad Kalinga and 4) community based development program which includes health and sanitation, livelihood for the target communities. The school and the hospital serve the needs of the residents of the 11 barangays that comprise the impact areas of the Foundation and the employees and families of the mining company.
