The Salesian Society of St. John Bosco is a congregation of priests and brothers in the church dedicated to the education and human development of the marginalized youth. The Salesians have been in the Philippines since 1951 and is divided into two ecclesial Provinces: the Philippine North Province (1951) and the Philippine South Province (1992). The Philippine North Province covers Metro Manila and Luzon while the Philippine South Province covers Visayas and Mindanao. Don Bosco-Mati belongs to the Philippine South Province. It was established in the early 1990s as a Training Center and a Parish. Don Bosco Training Center-Mati (DBTC-Mati) started operations in 1992 offering training courses in Mechanical and Automotive Technologies to poor youth of Mati. Its program proved to be effective as it is able to qualify the graduates to address the skills requirements of the small industries in Mati and even the big industries in Davao City.
In 2005, the training center aggressively began accepting young people from different places all over Mindanao by means of scholarships and partnerships with different NGOs, LGUs and industries. It also opened new courses in Motorcycle/Small Engine Servicing, Welding, Agri-crops, and Animal Production. It was also in the same year that the center began accepting female trainees for skills training. Now in its 25 years of existence, a total of 1,200 trainees graduated in DBTC-Mati in Automotive, Mechanical, Agri-Mechanical, Integrated Farming, Motorcycle/Small Engine Servicing and Welding Technologies. Today, the center is persistently intensifying its training program in Mindanao for the Out-of-School Youth.
In 2016, the center added the Senior High School Program to cater more youth and continue to expand its reach in providing quality training for Tech-Voc. With its partnership with TESDA and DepEd, Don Bosco Training Center aims to be the leading Tech-Voc and Senior High School Provider in Davao Oriental. One concrete step taken by the center was the accreditation by TESDA as the Assessment Center for National Certification in Machining NC 1 & NC 2, Automotive Servicing NC 1 & NC 2, Welding NC 1 & NC 2,
Motorcycle/Small Engine Servicing NC 2, Driving NC 2, Agri-crops NC 1 & NC 2, Animal Production (Poultry) NC 2, and Animal Production (Swine) NC 2.
Don Bosco Training Center-Mati is looking forward to becoming a Center of Excellence for Technical-Vocational and Senior High School Training in Davao Oriental and in the whole island of Mindanao. Hence, the expansion of facilities and course offerings are necessary. New relevant courses will be offered under Handyman Skills Training Program consisting of six competencies: Carpentry NC 2, Masonry NC 2, Plumbing NC 3 2, AutoCAD, Welding
NC 12, and Driving NC 2. These expansions ensure more Senior High School Students and Out-of-School Youth can be accommodated the following school year.
Don Bosco Training Center-Mati partnered with DepEd in the implementation of the K to 12 Program specifically in offering the Tech-Voc Livelihood Track. The Center is fully aware that the present situation of public schools in Mindanao cannot cope with the demand of offering comprehensive technical vocational training to Senior High School Students. To complement this, DBTC-Mati, with its mission to educate the young especially the poor deserving rural youth and having the capability and experience in offering quality Technical and Vocational Training, the center decided to expand its Senior High School Program.
